Intellectual property is a very broad subject, about which we have only scratched the surface. It can be viewed from numerous perspectives: political, legal, philosophical, etc. However, the issue that interests me most about intellectual property is the extent to which it affects us as individuals and our freedom per se.
What are the boundaries that determine that a work is mine? If I go to a party with my make-up on, get a picture taken of me, and someone publishes that picture on the internet, are they somehow stealing my intellectual or artistic property?
I find it particularly difficult to decide what is and what is not intellectual property. There are obvious cases like paintings, books and inventions, but human creation is not just about that. I feel that although the creative commons are very helpful in allowing us to use numerous resources, be inspired and move forward, there are many intellectual properties that are not considered, (e.g. make-up, bodypainting, some kinds of streetart, etc.) If I make these kinds of creations that are not considered, should I feel that my work is protected? Or do we need to broaden the concept of what is art and what should be protected?
